Soil was 3-4 for hardness by N balk, & was c 15-20 cm deeper (higher) than the loose part on the N side of Wll 4 which was about 2 for hardness; there was more consolidated soil (perhaps 2-3) lower down under the loose material; small charcoal bits throughout
