Interpretation

Function:

In the area below L 21, it seems to be a levelling layer (surface?) to seal against the later (S) phase of Wall 7; here it is wedge-shaped, having its greatest thickness to the N, against the wall; to the E it is very rubbly & irregular, but was simply an occupation surface

Stratigraphy remarks:

Seals against the later phase of Wall 7 & may have been an occupatioon surface contemporary with it; it sits directly on top of EB Surf 23 (and on bedrock in places), but contains a considerable amount of late pottery; the area may have been cleaned down to this compact surface (23) before 22 & later material was laid down
