Interpretation

Function:

May be occupation buildup from the period preceeding the laying of Surf 16, but more likely seems to be a leveling fill for this surface; N half of the surface sits on a compact material which slopes down sharply to the N, so L 18 may have been set down to level things off to the same level as L 22

Stratigraphy remarks:

It is unclear whether L 19 cut through Surf 16 & L 18, or if L 19 was below a once existent Surf 16 sealing up to Wall 5's E extension (beyond its corner with Wall 8); L 18 may thus equal 19, or it may have been cut into at the same time that Surf 16 was cut or broken, thus would predate 19; there is a poss that L 18, 19, 26 & 25 are all equal, because they are all of the same soft consistence & dark color, though 18 & 19 are not ashy as are 25 & 26; they all occur on the same sloping stratigraphic level; & this same material was found beneath the one stone which represents the E extension of Wall 5, thus providing the continuity from S to N along the E balk; if this was the case, then Surf 16 would have sealed against Wall 5, covering L 19 as well as 18; since Surf 16 is cut, however, there is no way to confirm this

Remarks

Remarks:

Ccomes from only directly below Surf 16, though the same kind of material is present beyond the N edge of Surf 16--it is the same level; these were separated to get a pottery reading from below the surface; was present only beneath the N half of Surf 16; 22 is beneath the N half
