Interpretation
Function:
Seems to be a fill that either washed or was dumped into this area; it is not an ashy material with many organic remains, so would not have been a garbage dump (as is L 25); it may have been used as a fill to level the area for Surf 10, since much of the pottery was lying flat, & Surf 22 beneath it was very irregular & stony
Stratigraphy remarks:
Close to the ground surface, as are all of the occupation features in the S part of the square; but part of it is sealed under Surf 10 & L 11, making it clear that it is not topsoil or other contaminated erosional debris; it sealed against the later phase of Wall 7 & poss against Installation 15, so again, may have been levelling fill or buildup for surfaces used with Wall 7; it does not seal against the full length of Wall 7 but is disturbed at the W end by Wall 12 & Surf 21; Wall 12 is prob a later feature; but 13 appears to seal against Surf 21, thus post-dating it; it may be equal to L 17 which is also a soft, late-dating fill, but 17 may be a later disturbance since it appears at a higher level than does 13; it may also be equal to L 20, but here there is no clear continuity between the 2; so may simply be a pocket of topsoil
