Interpretation

Function:

Blockage in a doorway; it seems intentional to separate the room to the N (poss beaten-earth Surf 15) from a room to S (in square 7K62); Wall 4 may have fallen in at an earlier phase so it is poss that the doorway was blocked for safety reasons as well

Stratigraphy remarks:

Seems to be later than Walls 3, 4 & 6, but contemporary with poss Surf 15; ash debris just inside the doorway (to the N) suggests that the surface was used with or after the blockage (since building a fire in an operational doorway doesn't seem typical or make sense); Surf 15 also appears to go under the blockage

Remarks:

The distribution of the stones is patterned in that there is definite layering as well as a "loose" boulder and chink formation; it appears as though the W end of Wall 4, making a 50 cm doorway between it & Wall 6, collapsed and was rebuilt; the rebuild appears to be of a poorer quality than the rest of Wall 4 ( that is, the rebuild is less solid & not as squared as the rest); some of what appeared to be blockage was really part of E end of Wall 4; Slumping of Wall 6 to E seems to have closed the doorway down to 25 cm, poss occasioning the blockage
