Interpretation

Function Beaten-earth surface, with poss hearth area, & because of its narrow width, approx 1.5 m between walls 3 & 4, may have been a protected area from wind; poss roofed over as evidenced by many plaster inclusions (although none showed evidence of reed impressions, etc.); some pieces (about 15 cm square & oriented at 195 deg & slanted at an angle of 22 deg) were, however, from Loca 13 & showed two layers laminated together
Stratigraphy remarks Seals against top existing course of Wall 3 & clearly runs beneath Wall 4, which, upon its removal, was shown to be built upon it without any foundation; likely contemp with Surf 10

Clumps of plaster inclusions & a portion of plaster surface in Loca 8 which sealed over the W edge of the NW stone of Wall 12 for a distance of approx 25 cm; a zoomorphic figurine head was found in beneath Wall 4 (after its removal) in Loca 7; large cooking pot body sherd in Pail 60
