Interpretation

Function:

Compact layer under L 2; compactness & texture may poss suggest debris from early quarrying procedures carried out on bedrock to the S (8L63); another poss cause is that it was compacted by the weight of topsoil & rock tumble above

Stratigraphy remarks:

This compact layer is over bedrock and found to be equal to 8, which goes under the semi-circular Wall 6. The shows that both 3 and 8 accumulated or was deposited before the structure was built. A probable date for the layer is IR2, indicated by pottery readings, and its relation to other loci. This layer extends across the 5 m of the square, North, covering 12, a loose soil layer.
