Function Rocky nari layer composed of chalk stones & some soil; it was the bottom in a series of nari layers which made up theEIR1 rampart; seems to have served as a rough layer to provide purchase on top of the smooth surface of the MB rampart beneath; they would also allow drainage along the former rampart surface
